Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia: Etiology, Symptoms and Management

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is benign in healthy infants, but can be a significant clinical condition in high-risk babies. An understanding of the pathophysiology, etiologies and management is essential for the nurse when caring for neonates. This CE activity will discuss the physiology, pathophysiology, etiologies, clinical signs and symptoms and therapeutic management of neonates with conjugated/unconjugated bilirubin.

 

After review of the module, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the physiology and pathophysiology of   hyperbilirubinemia
  2. Identify etiologies of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia
  3. Evaluate treatment strategies, including phototherapy, for the neonate with hyperbilirubinemia
